Macon -- historic font of that old sweet song now interspersed with screaming guitars -- touts a modern-day fusion of shopping allure to go with Grits Martinis and Fried Green Tomato Napoleans at Johnston Street's Grits Café. High Cotton, at First Street and Cotton Avenue, hosts an artisan gallery while stocking antiques, jewelry, and trashy treasures. On Mulberry Street, the Cherry Blossom Festival Gift Shop sells an assortment of prints, collector plates, and stylish T-shirts, some declaring "real men wear pink." On Cherry Street, Karla's Shoe Boutique, owned by the daughter of late music legend Otis Redding and her mother Zelma, steps up the pace with designer footwear and accessories.
Between Corbin and Rogers avenues, Ingleside Village Shopping District provides pedestrian-friendly blocks of antique stores, art galleries, eateries, and shops for one-of-a-kinds. On Ingleside Avenue, Payne Village Antique Mall carries the real thing and reproductions. Colonial Macon Mall (mostly called Macon Mall), anchored by Belk, Macy's, JCPenney and Sears, has shops from Aeropostale to Wet Seal. Locust Grove's Tanger Factory Oulet Center off Bill Gardner Parkway features more than 70 name brand manufacturers and designers. Smiley's Flea Market, halfway between Macon and Warner Robin on Highway 247, has more than 1,000 bargain booths on Saturdays and Sundays.
